Dr Rakesh Kumar Vats has taken over as the new secretary general Medical Council of India.
An Indian Administrative Services official, Dr Vats was the former chairman of the National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority, India’s drug price watchdog.
Established in 1934, MCI governs the standards of medical education in the country.
The top regulatory body is currently run by a 7-member board of governors (BOG) appointed by the government superseding the MCI in September last year through an ordinance. The government is planning to replace IMC with a new regulatory agency. Medical Commission Bill, legislation proposing the regulatory body is pending clearance from the Parliament
Recently, the Union Cabinet gave its nod to the proposal for promulgation of the Indian Medical Council (Amendment) Second Ordinance, 2019 to allow the BOG to run MCI.
