Saturday spike at 39K; India’s exponential growth pattern in SARS CoV-2 infection continues

With 38,902 new cases reported on Saturday, India’s total count of COVID-19 cases has reached 10.77 lakh. The death toll has gone up to 26,816 with 543 new fatalities reported in the past 24 hours. There are about  3.37 lakh active cases in the country at present and  some 6.77 lakh patients have been cured.

Maharashtra remained the worst affected state with 8,348 new COVID-19 cases on Saturday and the state’s total tally crossed the 3-lakh mark already.  Tamil Nadu and Delhi are the other two states which reported the large number of positive cases.  The active cases in Maharashtra alone currently stands at 1.23 lakh while 11,596 fatalities have been reported so far. The number of deaths in the state however was low at 144 on Saturday compared to the above 200 reported per day in the last several weeks. Of the total 144 fatalities in the last 24 hours, Mumbai alone recorded 65 deaths, taking up the city toll to 5,650 in all.

There are about 14.2 million cases already reported worldwide and there were 6 lakh deaths registered due to COVID-19 so far. India is currently the third most affected nation with the pandemic after the US and Brazil globally.
