India’s COVID-19 deaths breach 91,000 mark as daily average remains over 1000 in SeptemberSeptember 24, 2020 0 By FM
The rise in Covid-19 related deaths in India continued at an average of over 1000 per day in the last three weeks. With 1,129 new deaths, including the demise of Union minister Suresh Angadi at the AIIMS- New Delhi, India reported a total of 91,189 COVID-19 fatalities as on Wednesday.
The country confirmed 86,825 fresh COVID-19 infections on Wednesday taking its total caseload past 57 lakh. The total number of SARS CoV-2 infection cases reported in India already reached 57,27,193. Of this, 9,715,23 infections constitute as active caseload, while 46,652,83 patients have seen recovery.
The daily new COVID-19 cases soared past 5,000 mark in Kerala for the first time reaching 5,376 on Wednesday. The state breached its 4,000 cases mark for the first time on September 18. The COVID tally of the state has reached 1,481,32 till now. The active cases went up to 42,786. There are 362 critically ill patients in ICUs, 95 of them on ventilator support, according to the state health ministry. Kerala has already reported 592 deaths in all related to the virus infection.
Thiruvananthapuram reported the highest number of cases at 852 which was followed by Ernakulam at 624 cases, Malappuram (512), Kozhikode (504), Kollam (503) and Alapuzha (501), Thrissur (478), Kannur (365), Palakkad (278), Kottayam (262), Pathanamthitta (223), Kasaragod (136), Idukki (79) and Wayanad (59) cases. The state ministry of health said that out of the infection cases, about 5,192 cases were locally acquired infections, with no known source in 640 cases. This included 99 healthcare workers. The number of tests conducted in the state also hit a new high with 51,200 samples in 24 hours.
Maharashtra reported 21,029 new COVID-19 cases on Wednesday as its total case tally past 12.50 lakh mark to reach 12,63,799 of whom 2,73,477 are active. As many as 479 more deaths pushed the total fatalities to 33,886. As many as 19,476 patients have seen recovery during the day taking the cumulative recoveries in the state till date to 9,56,030.
“Of a total 61,06,787 laboratory samples tested thus far, 12,63,799 (20.69%) have returned positive with more than 89,000 samples across the State being tested in the last 24 hours. The State’s recovery rate has risen to 75.65%,” State Surveillance Officer Dr. Pradeep Awate said, adding that the State’s case fatality rate was currently 2.68%.
Pune reported more than 3,000 cases to take its total case tally to 2,70,866 while 61 deaths saw its mortality count climb to 5,429. Mumbai reported 2,360 cases to take its total case tally to 1,90,264 of which 27,186 are active. As many as 49 fatalities saw the city’s death toll rise to 8,604.
As many as 6,74,36,031 samples were tested up to September 23 for Covid-19 in India. Of these, 11,56,569 samples were tested on Wednesday alone, said Indian Council of Medical Research.
