India’s caseload crosses 7.8 million; fatalities reach 1,17 lakh

India’s COVID-19 caseload rose to 78,13,668 after reporting 53,935 fresh incidences on Friday. The active infections in the country stand at 6,80,801. A total of 70,13,569 patients have recovered so far with 66,994 being reported as cured/discharged yesterday. With 655 new deaths, the total fatalities of the pandemic have risen to 1,17,992.

Maharashtra on Friday reported 7,347 fresh COVID-19 cases as opposed to 13,247 recoveries taking its tally to 16,32,544. With 184 deaths, the western state’s toll has reached 43,015. While the number of active cases has dipped to 1,43,922, total recoveries have risen to 14,45,103. Maharashtra’s’s recovery rate stands at 88.52%, while its case fatality rate is 2.63%.

Mumbai reported the highest incidences of all districts with 1,470 new cases taking its total tally to 2,48,802 of whom 17,667 are active cases. As many as 48 fatalities saw the city’s death toll rise to 10,009.

“Of a total of 84,79,155 laboratory samples tested thus far, 16,32,544 (19.25%) have returned positive, with around 77,000 samples across the state being tested in the last 24 hours,” said State Surveillance Officer Dr Pradeep Awate,

A total 24,38,245 people across the state are in home quarantine and 13,545 are in institutional quarantine facilities.

Andhra Pradesh’s case tally jumped past the eight lakh-mark with 3,765 new infections and 20 deaths on Friday. Over a 24-hour period, 80,238 samples were tested. The cumulative caseload of the state has reached 8,00,684 in all of which the active cases stood low at 31,721. The total recoveries have reached 7,62,419 while the death toll stood at 6,544.

Karnataka on Friday reported 5,356 new cases and test positivity stood at 4.94%. The total caseload stood close to that of AP reaching 7,93,907. The active cases stood at 89,483 while overall recoveries climbed to 6,93,584 and the death toll stood at 10,821.

Kerala reported 8,511 new cases on Friday, testing 64,789 samples and recorded a positivity rate of 13.13%. The total case tally stood at 3,77,835 of which 95,658 were active cases. As many as 2,80,793 infected individuals have recovered from the illnesses by far. The death toll stood at 1,282 with the health department reporting 26 deaths to the official list yesterday.

Globally, the total novel coronavirus infections have reached 42,488,887 and the death toll has reached 1,149,229. The highest number of cases is marked by the U.S at 8,746,953 which is followed by India and Brazil.
