COVID-19 case count goes up in Kerala; Punjab slaps night curfew

India reported 44,699 new COVID-19 incidences on Wednesday pushing the case tally to 92,66,697. Of the total caseload, the overall active cases remained at 4,51,351 as of now. Meanwhile, the number of people who have recuperated from the virus infection has reached 86,77,986 with 36,582 patients getting recovered yesterday. The death toll climbed to 1,35,261with 518 new fatalities.

With 6,491 new incidences, Kerala reported the highest cases on Wednesday pushing the state’s cumulative case burden to 5,78,364. The state had tested 59,983 samples on the day and the positivity rate stood at 9.04%. 5,770 recoveries were reported during the day. So far,5,11,008 persons who contracted COVID-19 have recuperated from the infection. The active caseload stood at 65,116 cases. The state’s cumulative death toll rose to 2,122, with the addition of 26 more deaths.

Maharashtra reported 6,159 new COVID-19 cases on Wednesday after conducting around 90,400 tests, as opposed to 4,844 recoveries. The total case tally has risen to 17,95,959 with the number of active cases climbing to 84,464. The cumulative recoveries stand at 16,63,723. 65 recent deaths took the total fatalities to 46,748.

Delhi reported 5,246 new cases on Wednesday after conducting around 61,800 tests taking the total number of cases to 5,45,787. Also, 99 more deaths have been reported in the past 24 hours, taking the total number of deaths to 8,720. Of the total cases, 4,98,780 people have recovered and there are 38,287 active cases.

West Bengal added 3,528 new infections taking the total caseload to 4,66,991. The active infections stood at 24,752 in the state. As many as 3,605 patients were recovered yesterday while 51 patients succumbed to ailments related to the infection. The total recoveries went up to 4,34,067 till now and the fatalities totalled 8,172.

Rajasthan saw 3,285 positive cases on Wednesday pushing its COVID-19 case tally to 2,53,767. Of the total caseload 26,320 are active infections at present with 2,25,229 patients getting recovered and 2,218 succumbing to the infection so far.

Uttar Pradesh added new cases at 2,305 pushing the caseload to 5,33,355. The active infections stood at 24,876 with 5,00,835 recoveries and 7,644 fatalities reported so far.

With 2,197 new COVID incidences the caseload of Haryana rose to 2,24,489. The active cases stood at 20,948 with 2,01,250 recoveries and 2,291 deaths reported till now.

Punjab saw a spike of 770 new cases pushing its case tally to 1,48,435. The active cases rose to 7,129. The total recoveries stood at 1,36,622 and the deaths totalled to 4,684. Nearly 25,000 RT-PCR tests are done in the state daily.

Owing to the new spurt of COVID-19 cases in Punjab the state has decided to reimpose night curfew in all towns and cities from December 1. In keeping with the curbs, restaurants and marriage venues can remain open only till 9.30 p.m.

The curbs shall be reviewed on December 15. The night curfew will remain in force from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m., announced the chief minister. The fine for not following guidelines shall be hiked from the present ₹500 to ₹1,000, said the state officials.

The minister also directed the health and medical education departments to make emergency appointments of specialists, super-specialists, nurses and paramedics to augment the manpower which was recently strengthened with the recruitment of 249 specialist doctors and 407 medical officers. Measures were taken to encourage more private hospitals to earmark beds for COVID-19 care.

Himachal Pradesh also continued to see spike in daily cases with 837 cases reported yesterday. The total cases rose to 36,566 with 7,875 active cases. As many as 28,080 patients have recuperated from the infection until now.13 new deaths took the total deaths to 575.
