Confirmed COVID-19 cases in India cross 1 crore mark

The number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in India crossed the 10 million mark (1 crore) on December 18, 2020. In the last 24 hours, 26,991 fresh infections took India’s COVID tally to 1,00,04,825, as per the official data. 347 deaths linked to the infection were recorded, taking the tally to 1,45,136.

Across India, over 16 crore coronavirus tests have been conducted so far, the government data shows. The death rate stood at 1.45 per cent this morning, while the positivity rate stood at 2.14 per cent. India’s recovery rate of 95 per cent is the highest globally, the government annouced on Saturday morning.

The trend of an exponential increase in India’s total COVID-19 recoveries continues with the number of people who have recuperated from the disease crossing a crucial peak.

A dip in daily cases has helped the country’s fight against COVID-19. Earlier this week, 22,065 new cases were reported in a day — lowest one-day figure in five months. “Recoveries are more than 30 times the active cases (which is currently only 3.14% of total cases),” the Union Health Ministry said this morning.

A “steep rise” has been observed in recoveries – from 50,000 in May to over 95 lakh in December, said the Union Health Ministry. “Central government’s calibrated strategies through a ‘Whole of Government’ approach have sharply focused on high recovery rate and low fatality rate on a sustained basis.”

Kerala reported the highest daily COVID-19 cases in the country at 5,456 on Friday with over 54,500 tests conducted during the period. The total casetally stands at 6,93,866, of which 58,895 are active cases. As many as 4,701 recoveries were registered during the day taking the total recoveries to 6,32,065. With 23 new deaths, the total fatalities due to the pandemic has risen to 2,758 in the state.

Maharashtra’s coronavirus tally rose to 18,88,767 after 3,994 people tested positive for the infection on Friday. A total of 4,467 patients were discharged after recovery. So far, 17.79 lakh people have recovered. However, the fatality count went up to 48,574 with the death of 75 patients.

Mumbai city reported 642 new cases, pushing its overall count to 2.85 lakh while its death toll rose to 10,970 as nine patients succumbed to the virus. Meanwhile, the Union Ministry of Health has clarified that getting vaccinated for COVID-19 will be voluntary.

Delhi saw new cases at 1,418 pushing its overall caseload to 6,14,775. Over 88.4K samples were tested during the day. There are 11,419 active infections under treatment in the city. As many as 2,160 were recovered yesterday. The total recoveries add up to 5,93,137. With 37 new deaths the total fatalities took to 10,219.

According to Centre for Systems Science and Engineering (CSSE) at John Hopkins University, U.S. leads the table in coronavirus cases with 1,72,33,022 cases and deaths at 313,246. Brazil stands at third position with 71,10,434 cases.
