India sees new COVID-19 cases at 17,797 with Kerala reporting highest

India registered 17,797 new COVID-19 cases in the last 24 hours pushing the case tally to 1,05,12,831. As many as 17,797 cured/discharged cases were reported in the past day taking the total recoveries to 1,01,46,254. The death toll has risen to 1,51,765 with 201 new fatalities reported on Wednesday. The active cases have declined to 2,10,459, as of now. The total number of persons found to be positive with the new UK-variant COVID-19 stands at 102, said the Health Ministry.

Kerala reported the highest daily new cases at 6,004 on Wednesday. The total confirmed cases stand at 8,25,770, as of now, of which 65,374 are active infections. The state saw 5,158 recoveries and 26 deaths taking the total recoveries and death toll to 7,56,817 and 3,374 respectively.

Maharashtra saw new cases at 3,556 on Wednesday. The total confirmed cases stood at 19,78,044. The state has seen 18,74,279 recoveries and 50,221 deaths from COVID-19 so far. As many as 70 fatalities were recorded on the day. The active cases stand at 52,365.

West Bengal saw 723 new cases, 794 recoveries and 18 deaths in the past 24 hours. The case tally stood at 5,62,795, of which the active infections totalled to 7,303. The death toll has risen to 9,993, till now.

The health ministry has announced that a massive country-wide COVID-19 vaccination drive is scheduled to kick-start from January 16.

The roll-out of COVID-19 vaccine will provide priority to healthcare workers and frontline workers, estimated at around three crores, followed by those above 50 years of age and the under-50 population groups with co-morbidities, numbering around 27 crores.
