20,000 new cases on Saturday; India COVID tally at 5.2 lakh

India witnessed one of the biggest spikes in new cases of COVID-19 infection on Saturday.  With 20,060 new cases reported in the past 24 hours, the total confirmed cases of the country now stood at 5,29,533. Of these, 2,04,326 are active cases while 3,09,202 patients have recovered until now. According to the data from the Union Health Ministry, as many as 414 deaths were reported during the day taking the overall toll to 16,095.

Maharashtra reported the highest number recording as many as 6,368 new cases yesterday. Next to Maharashtra, Delhi, reported 2,948 fresh cases while Tamil Nadu saw 3,713 cases. Telangana became the fourth state in the country to register over 1,000 cases in a single day.

The total confirmed cases from Maharashtra stood at 1,59,133 as on Sunday. Delhi has 80,188 confirmed cases while Tamil Nadu has 78,335 cases.

Kerala reported 195 fresh cases, taking the overall tally to 4,071. Malappuram district reported the highest number of cases (47), after Palakkad with 25 new infections, Thrissur (22) and Kottayam (15). Twenty-two people have so far lost lives to the infection in the state so far.

The Sunday lockdown system will be administered in Karnataka from July 5 permitting only essential services to function stated the State officials.

According to the Health Ministry’s revised ‘Clinical Management Protocols for COVID-19’, dexamethasone can now be used as an alternative choice to methylprednisolone for managing moderate to severe cases of COVID-19.
