India reports a surge of 3,661 cases in 24 hours; Fatality rate remained lowest at 3.3%

India witnessed 3,661 new cases of COVID-19 in the past 24 hours since Thursday. With this, the total number of reported cases has risen to 56,613 with 35,902 being active as on 8th May. While, the union health minister Dr Harshvardhan urged all the states to take strict measures to isolate, test, quarantine and treat positive cases in view of the incoming migrant labourers expected to reach their states in the coming days.

Dr Harshvardhan confirmed that 1,084 patients have been cured at various hospitals across the country in the last 24 hours and the fatality rate in India remained the lowest in the world at 3.3%. The country reported a total of 1,886 deaths so far due to coronavirus infection.

The Union Minister also stated that the testing capacity of India has increased to conduct 95,000 tests per day. A total number of 13,57,442 tests have been conducted so far for COVID-19 in the country. Among the Indian states, Kerala reports the highest recovery rate (93%), the minister said.

Among the worst-hit states, Maharashtra, which has 16,758 COVID-19 cases remains topmost with a recovery rate of 16%, while Rajasthan reports a recovery rate of 48%. Gujarat lies second to Maharashtra with 6,625 confirmed cases. As of now, there are 130 hotspot districts, 284 non-hotspot districts and 319 non-affected districts in the country.

Thirteen States/UTs including Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Arunachal Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Goa, Jharkhand, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir UT, Kerala, Ladakh, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram and Odisha had not reported any case in the last 24 hours.

As on date, there are 180 districts with no new cases in less than 7 days, 180 districts with no new cases in 7-13 days, 164 districts which have not had any new case in 14-20 days and 136 districts with no new cases since the last 21-28 days. Daman & Diu, Sikkim, Nagaland and Lakshadweep have not reported a single case till date, Dr Harshvardhan said in a media briefing.
