Sasakawa- ILS provides scholarships to 40 students from leprosy background

The Sasakawa-India Leprosy Foundation (S-ILF), an organisation dedicated to the social and economic empowerment of persons affected by leprosy and their families, granted scholarships to 40 meritorious students from leprosy background, as part of its 14th Foundation Day.
The scholars were felicitated in the presence of NK Singh, Chairman of 15th Finance Commission. NK Singh also conveyed his immense appreciation for the work being undertaken by S-ILF to eliminate leprosy and how its efforts at providing livelihood and educational support for persons affected by the disease had contributed to overcoming stigma and enable mainstreaming in the society.

Dr Vivek Lal, CEO, S-ILF, affirmed the commitment of the organization to further increase the opportunities for education and livelihood support for the persons affected by leprosy and their families. In keeping with this, the number of scholarships provided this year were also increased. Sasakawa-India Leprosy Foundation (S-ILF) was instituted in November 2006 and works to support leprosy-affected individuals by helping them fighting stigma and restoring dignity.The foundation focuses on providing technical and financial support for setting up micro-enterprises enabling self-employment. It also provides access to vocational training and higher educational opportunities, empower persons affected by leprosy to access government welfare schemes, create awareness about leprosy among all sections of society and engage with opinion and policymakers for the rights and inclusion of persons affected by leprosy.
