AIMS conference highlights role of nurses in perioperative paediatric heart careJune 13, 2019
The Department of Paediatric Cardiology at Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences (AIMS) organized a three-day conference on ‘Perioperative Management of Congenital Heart Disease’ from 7th to 9th June, 2019 at Kochi, Kerala.
The conference emphasized the increasing importance of training key healthcare personnel for delivering high quality perioperative care for children with heart disease.
“The children with heart disease are accounting for a sizeable proportion of deaths occurring in the first year of life in many parts of the country, particularly in Kerala. In partnership with government we felt that we need to make a concerted effort in reducing infant mortality from heart disease, which means taking good care of babies, before surgery, during surgery and after surgery,” said Dr. Krishna Kumar, the organizing chairperson and Clinical Professor and Head of the Department of Paediatric Cardiology, AIMS, Kochi to Future Medicine.
The purpose of this conference was to provide education to all concerned caregivers how to take care of babies before, during and after surgery-its perioperative, he added.
This conference had the distinction that doctors and nurses are sharing a common forum, perhaps for the first time. There were several presentation from nurses during the conference.
There is an urgent need to break the tradition of hierarchy that exists where nurses merely carry out orders. If nurses start to think for themselves, they can actually produce dramatic improvements in pediatric perioperative cardiac care, according to Dr. Krishna Kumar.
The event witnessed workshop sessions designed for intensive care specialists, nurses and paediatricians, and presentations on various healthcare scenarios discussed from the perspectives of specialists and nurses.
It also held sessions to discuss ways to educate and support the paediatric cardiac intensive care training programmes in low- and middle-income countries (LMIC).
The event was conducted by AIMS in collaboration with the Children’s Heart Link – an international NGO to develop solutions for challenges in Child Heart Disease management.
Over 250 participants from all over India and countries such as Malaysia, Sri Lanka, South Africa and, Bangladesh, involving surgeons, paediatric cardiologists, anesthesiologists, and nurses had attended the conference.
