Initiative for cancer-free Ernakulam launchedAugust 7, 2019
Cancer Free Ernakulam project was inaugurated by Kerala health minister K K Shailaja on Sunday 4th August, 2019. The initiative was launched by the district planning committee with the support of all local bodies.
A sum of Rs 169 lakh will be utilized for implementing the project, reports Times of India.
Panchayats will contribute Rs 1 lakh each, block panchayats Rs 2 lakh, municipalities Rs 3 lakh, district panchayat and Kochi corporation will contribute Rs 10 lakh each to implement the project in the current financial year.
“As many as 55,000 new cancer cases are reported in Kerala every year. This is a model project, which creates awareness on cancer at the bottom level of the society,” said K K Shailaja.
Under the initiative 82 panchayats, 13 municipalities, 14 block panchayats, district panchayat and Kochi corporation will join hands to make Ernakulam cancer free.
The programme plans to conduct awareness programmes at each ward in all local bodies. Screening tests for residents will be conducted at community and primary health centres in respective areas.
