New COVID-19 cases soar in Kerala despite nationwide declineJanuary 13, 2021
India recorded 15,903 new cases of COVID-19 in the past 24 hours, pushing the overall confirmed cases to 1,04,95,816, according to the union health ministry. As many as 17,747 discharges and 200 deaths related to the infection were also reported on the same day taking the total recoveries and the death toll to 1,01,28,457 and 1,51,564 respectively. With this, the active COVID-19 caseload dipped further to 2,11,452 accounting for 2.07% of the total cases. The national COVID-19 recovery rate has risen to 96.49%.
“India’s weekly positivity rate is 2.06% with 22 states and UTs having weekly positivity rate less than the national average,” the health ministry said.
According to the ministry, 70.08% of the new cases are concentrated in seven states and UTs. Kerala reported the maximum daily new cases at 5,507, followed by Maharashtra 2,936 and Chhattisgarh 729 new instances of the infection.
Kerala’s case tally rose to 8,19,766 with 5,507 new infections. The active cases stood at 64,554 in the state as of now. As many as 4,270 new recoveries and 25 deaths were recorded on the day. The state has seen a total of 7,51,659 recoveries and 3,348 fatalities from the infection so far.
The overall COVID-19 infections in Maharashtra took to 19,74,488 with the new cases reported on Tuesday, the state health department said. The active cases stood at 51,892 seeing a total of 18,71,270 recoveries and 50,151 deaths so far.
With 729 new COVID-19 cases and 12 deaths being reported on Tuesday, Chhattisgarh’s caseload rose to 2,90,813 and the death toll to 3,517, according to the state health officials.
A total of 18,34,89,114 samples were tested for COVID-19 up to January 12 including 8,36,227 samples tested yesterday, said the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR).
