LifeCell introduces DNA screening test for newborns

LifeCell International, a stem cell bank and a mother & baby diagnostics company, launched RightStart – an integrated DNA test for newborns to detect over 50 medical conditions.
The technology has been found to drastically reduce false-positive reporting, thereby avoiding unnecessary follow-up tests, LifeCell said.
The current process of newborn screening for abnormal metabolic profile warrant further testing for confirmation.
RightStart newborn screening does not require an additional sample since a portion of the sample collected initially can be used. Also, no additional costs would need to be incurred by the parents.
LifeCell had tied up with Dr Mary Seeterlin, who has a decade of experience in newborn screening programme at Department
of Public Health in Michigan and is the co-author of several guidelines and publications on the subject, to serve as a consultant to the programme.
In India, adoption of newborn screening has been weak, largely due to low awareness and also due to the lack of reliability of test results, according to the company.
